Recent Award Winners and Student Activities, Spring 2008

Andrew Filippone Jr. (Studies in Film Form and Aesthetics) will be exhibiting his documentary film on April 20 at UnionDocs in Brooklyn. The film is called “Happy Monday.” Filippone describes it as a “documentary film object” because it’s a film that’s left the screen and become a tangible and physical thing; it is essentially a large light box that audiences walk up to and linger over. This documentary has been previously shown at the Rhode Island International Film Festival (August 2007) and the Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival (October 2007). Information on the UnionDocs exhibit is here: http://www.uniondocs.org/blog/happy-monday/  Information and photographs of “Happy Monday” can be found here:  http://web.mac.com/afilipponejr/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/happymonday/

Rebecca Journey (International Politics and Humanitarian Development) received the Amelia Ottinger Award for Excellence in Public Speaking at the Harvard University National Model United Nations.

Heather McCown (Partnership for Social Justice) received John Jay College’s first Keith L.T. Wright Service Award for her work at John Jay on Darfur Day, 2006) and her community work on reinstating the ferry in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Jared Rodriguez (History of the Americas) has just received both the Mellon Mays Fellowship and a Kaye Scholarship.  For the Mellon Mays Fellowship, he hopes to travel to Brazil this summer for a research project on “Black Political Consciousness in a Post-Dictatorship Society.”  Rodriguez is also a professional photographer who has had his first book cover published (”Road from ar Ramadi”).

CUNY Rogowsky Internship Program Updates

Summer 2008 CUNY Washington Internship Program

We are currently accepting applications for the Summer 2008 CUNY Washington Internship Program.  The application deadline is April 4

We have contracted for dormitory housing in Washington, DC for a total of 9 weeks in order to provide interns with additional time to settle in at the start and decompress at the conclusion of the summer program.  The internship service dates for the 2008 program are June 2 to July 30.  Several placements have already been secured on Capitol Hill, where it should be an exciting summer in this Presidential election year.  We are beginning to schedule weekly colloquia for your students, so they have an opportunity to share with various members of the Washington community.  We have also increased the stipend to $2,000 per student, which should help defray the costs of participation.

Fall 2008 CUNY Women’s Public Leadership Intern Program

We are pleased to announce the continuation and expansion of this highly successful internship opportunity for our students.  The Women’s Leadership Program will continue to serve students seeking to enhance their understanding of public policy at various levels of government-city, state and national.  Last year’s class was our largest yet, and we are interested in expanding this unique offering to even more CUNY students in Fall 2008.

The application deadline is July 11.  Once again, we have increased the stipend to $2,000 per student for this local, part-time internship.

Featured Independent Study of the Month

Saundra Ayala (Ancient Mediterranean Art History) - “Fayum Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt”

In the Fall of 2007 I completed my senior thesis/independent study on the Fayum Mummy Portraits of Roman Egypt. The portraits, which date from the 1st to 3rd centuries, are some of the best preserved paintings from antiquity and represent a kind of hybrid art in which Greco-Roman and Egyptian traditions can be seen simultaneously.

My research examined the portraits from an art, archaeology, science and sociology perspective, and presented several ways in which the portraits and their subjects may be interpreted in an attempt to better understand not only the art form of the mummy portraits but the context in which they were create and subsequently viewed. A visual analysis of several portraits on display in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art provided a physical description of the portraits. However, I looked beyond the portraits themselves to the history of painting and portraiture in Egyptian, Greek and Roman culture to determine how these influences and traditions were contextualized in the mummy portraits.

My research also shed light on questions of idealization in the mummy portraits by examining scientific evidence, and presented alternative explanations for the most common arguments concerning their representation. Additionally, the burial practices and funerary arts of Egypt, Greece and Rome were considered in light of their influences on the commemoration of the dead in Roman Egypt. The portraits also provided a central point from which the demographic and social identity of the inhabitants was examined.

For this independent study, I worked with my CUNY BA mentor Prof. Rachel Kousser, Art, at Brooklyn College.
