Every student develops one or two unique and/or interdisciplinary areas of concentration (like majors at traditional colleges). When you apply, you must provide a preliminary outline of your area(s). This is only a draft; if you are accepted, your plan will become official once it is approved by your chosen faculty mentor and the program’s Academic Director. Use the following guidelines in planning your area(s) of concentration, and look at the examples shown below and those in the application – all are recently completed areas.
- List intermediate or upper-level courses. Intermediate and advanced level courses usually have at least one pre-requisite in the same discipline. Faculty mentors will help students identify pertinent upper level courses for their area(s). The college catalogs typically indicate which courses are introductory, intermediate, or advanced. Faculty mentors will also help students identify upper level courses for their area(s). Of course, you will likely need to take introductory courses as prerequisites to upper level courses, but they will count separately toward your degree.
- Area of concentration courses must be offered at senior colleges and come from departments that offer bachelor’s degrees. You may also include internships or independent studies.
- A maximum of 50% of the courses you list may have been completed previously. Please make a notation next to any courses which you have already taken.
- CUNY Baccalaureate students are allowed to take no more than 3 Baruch Zicklin School courses total (3000-level and above) toward their degree. You must complete all course prerequisites before you will be allowed to enroll. You may want to select courses from another senior CUNY college that offers a degree in business. For more information, see Taking Business Courses at Baruch.
- Many of the courses offered throughout the university are available for review online at http://student.cuny.edu/cgi-bin/CourseCatalog/CCatColleges.pl.
- Indicate the college, department and course number, course title, and number of credits for each course. You must list a minimum of eight (8) courses to support one area of concentration proposal and six (6) each for dual area proposals. Include the title of your area of concentration above each sequence of courses.
