Alumna Syreeta Gates featured in Forbes Magazine- “5 Tips For ‘Making It’ in America”

CUNY BA alumna Syreeta Gates (B.A. 2013, Urban Youth Culture) has recently been featured in Forbes Magazine. Check out her “5 Tips For ‘Making It’ in America”:

“Syreeta Gates is no trust fund baby. She grew up in Jamaica, Queens—specifically, in Rochdale Village, which today is the largest predominantly minority-owned cooperative in the country. But rather than allowing the big city to smother her, she lived by the words of Tupac Shakur: “Just because you’re from the ghetto doesn’t mean you can’t grow.”

Today, Gates, 25, is a hip-hop-inspired success story. In 2010 she was named one of Glamour Magazine’s “Top 20 Under 25,” and in 2008 she founded the SWT Life (with seed funding from Ashoka Youth Venture) to expose New York City youth to the arts, entertainment, and leaders in business, as well as support teens with entrepreneurial coaching and personal development training. Gates has also hosted the WBAI radio program “History MEETS Hip-Hop,” designed for Polo Ralph Lauren, and this year released her first book: “Just Be Cause: Ah Ha Moments to Inspire the Next Generation of Change Makers.””
