Sustainable Energy, Sustainable Coastlines, Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Water Systems, Sustainable Tourism, Sustainable Art, Sustainable Transportation…these are areas of academic interest for some particularly enterprising students enrolled in CUNY’s University-wide degree, which has just launched a special website for CUNY students studying sustainability, http://cunyba.gc.cuny.edu/sustainability/

Students have, in fact, been formulating their degrees in sustainability through CUNY Baccalaureate (CUNY BA/BS) since the late 1990s. To help guide new and current students in this growing field, CUNY BA/BS is pleased to provide this new sub-portal to the degree’s main website.

According to the degree’s academic director, Dr. Kim J. Hartswick, “The field of sustainability is inherently interdisciplinary so it is appropriate that the first CUNY undergraduate students graduating with concentrations in this discipline earned their degrees through CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies. Since our first ‘sustainability graduate’ only two years ago we have now at least 35 others having completed or presently pursuing such degrees and this number is expected to grow. Our graduates are already making differences, for example, by pursuing ‘sustainable’ graduate degrees, working on renewable energies, and building water systems in Africa. It is through the education of such committed individuals that the challenges facing the sustainability of the world will be addressed and overcome.”

The website features news and announcements of interest to students and faculty in the field, as well as student and faculty profiles, a database of sustainability-related courses offered throughout the University, and links to other CUNY resources.

Stephen Paelet, a new CUNY BA/BS student as of fall 2009 (who had previously studied at UMass/Amherst, the New School, and Columbia University), says “CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies is the perfect place to study sustainability.” Paelet is planning his area of concentration in “Sustainable Development” and expects to take courses at City College, Hunter College, and Queens College.

He has been accepted to three Journalism graduate schools: Columbia, NYU, and CUNY.

You’re looking at the latest version of the CUNY Baccalaureate website, which is now run on Wordpress MU, a free software platform that can host thousands of blogs with a single installation. Wordpress MU has allowed us to integrate our dynamic content (blog posts, events, media) with our static informational pages.

For previous visitors, the basics of the site remain the same: the blue navigational menu provides one-click access to all information pages. These pages have been enhanced with

a left-side menu based on visitor areas (e.g., Prospective Students, Faculty Mentors, Alumni)

sidebars with selected recent posts and upcoming events

The home page now highlights

several student profiles

featured blog posts

a sidebar of blog categories, where you’ll find the latest announcements on opportunities, events, deadlines, etc.

(Fans of the old blog can still access all posts at http://cunyba.gc.cuny.edu/blog.)

Our new community feed near the bottom of the home page aggregates external blog posts from students, faculty mentors, alumni, and staff of the program. You can subscribe to this feed separately at http://cunyba.gc.cuny.edu/community/feed.

We’re also working on a number of future upgrades to the site, including

blog hosting for students and faculty mentors

an enhanced media gallery with videos, podcasts, and more

a backend social network where users can create groups, contact each other, post photos, etc.

Please send all feedback and suggestions related to the site to chris@chrisalensula.org.

Granton created a program using the “No Child Left Inside” Act as a model. She is taking groups of young women out of the facility to the local National Park (Gateway National Recreation Area) and creating cooperative events (i.e. birdwalks, planting, etc.) with one of the NPS rangers. This program is the first of its kind with OCFS youth in NYC. They are also planting a garden at the facility using organic methods. One goal is to teach ecology while also “planting” some good seeds in the young women themselves for their future.

Pam Jusino (Drama/Religious Studies): Along with one of her Queens College drama professors and a colleague of hers, playwright Robert Montgomery, Jusino is traveling to Athens, Greece to study Oedipus At Colonus in Mr. Montgomery’s new adaptation called The Rest of Oedipus. Read about this Drama Seminar in Greece here: http://qcpages.qc.cuny.edu/studyabroad/2009Summer.html. This is the second summer she is traveling abroad to do a Drama seminar.

Brittney Narcisse (Development Sociology): Going on a study abroad program to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Robin Roberts (Astrophysics/Earth-Sun Connection): Now a full-time staff member at the American Museum of Natural History Astrophysics Department (after completing two internships there), Roberts has decided to pay her good fortune forward by offering a summer research opportunity to a sophomore at City College who showed great spark and enthusiasm in a class they had together, Descriptive Astronomy. Roberts has introduced her to some colleagues and has secured several research projects for which she has been invited to participate; Roberts will also be a sub-advisor on one project with this student and two others who were selected for the nationally competitive National Science Foundation/Research Experiences for Undergraduates.

Jared Rodriguez (History of the Americas): Spending the summer doing research in Brazil, partly funded by the Mellon Foundation as a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellow. He will be researching Brazil’s first Black political party the Frente Negra Brasileira, the Brazilian Black Front which was formed in 1931, at the national archives and at several of the leading Brazilian research universities. He will also continuing his work with Brazilian academics and activists pushing to implement and expand Affirmative Action reforms in higher education. He will attend the Latin American Studies association conference in Rio de Janeiro, as well.
