Students should email professor directly for permission to register. See information below.

Registration info:

MEDP 290 Section 001
Code: 1949

Professor LaRosa

W 10:10-1 506HN

Writing intensive

Have a great story to tell but don’t know where to start? Intrigued by the explosion of documentary films in theatres, on TV and on the Internet? Madly curious to see what you could do with your digital camera and computer? In Developing the Documentary, students research and plan a documentary film they would like to make. Through a screening series in the first part of the course, students look at many common documentary storytelling techniques, including verite, interviews, poetic, broadcast news, personal diary, archival, recreations, animations, and more. Students also learn character development, how to find a strong narrative in your story, and how to plan and present your idea on paper.

The course begins with screening series includes award winning and influential historic and contemporary documentaries, and, as time permits, look at newer trends in the field. It then covers the basics of production -cameras, microphones, editing–and the business side of filmmaking–budgeting, copyrights, applying for grants, and preparing a treatment and proposal. The course fulfills Hunter’s writing intensive requirement as students write brief reaction papers each week about films they are watching as well as a midterm and final. Particular attention is paid to developing an awareness of visual style and choosing appropriate ways to craft an engaging and dynamic non-fiction film.

Interested students are encouraged to email Professor Melanie La Rosa asap to get permission to register. Most students are in film or media department and are sophomores or advanced, but students from many departments and all levels have taken this class. Many listed pre-reqs are waived for motivated students.
