Civic Leaders of Tomorrow Public Policy Fellowship

Manhattan Borough President Scott M. Stringer’s Civic Leaders of Tomorrow Public Policy Fellowship promotes future leaders in public policy and advocacy through fellowship placements at not-for-profit and community-based organizations in New York City. Fellows are placed at organizations advocating for underserved communities in a variety of issue areas.

In recognition of rapidly evolving demographics and the increasing challenges of sustaining equal access and affordability in New York City and broader society, the Manhattan Borough President’s Office (MBPO) seeks to increase opportunities for the development of future leadership in public policy and advocacy in areas of underserved need. Civic Leaders of Tomorrow has these purposes:

Fellows will engage in work involving policy advocacy and interaction with government entities and communities served by the organization. ENG 3500 Advanced Reporting at Baruch

Interested in new media? Looking for an edge when entering
the digitalized workplace?

BARUCH’S ENG 3500

Students in ENG 3500 Advanced Reporting, offered by the Journalism Department at Baruch College, conceptualize and create a full journalistic, multimedia project. Just as real reporters do in real newsrooms, students learn to tell stories across several platforms. Not only do students write traditional news stories, they also produce one or more piece of multimedia related to their topics. These features include photos, video and audio slideshows - using material collected and edited by the students. In doing so, the students become better prepared to enter the modern newsroom, where journalists are required to incorporate different types of media into their reporting.

The Neighborhood Oral History Workshop: Harlem

The Neighborhood Oral History Workshop:  Harlem

MEDP 399.15

Instructor:  James Levy

Meets:      Thursdays 11:10 to 2:00

Hunter College

Combining methods in documentary, oral history, and urban studies, this course explores the concept of “neighborhood” and seeks to understand how it operates in Harlem today.  Using digital audio recorders, students will record and transcribe one-on-one interviews with community members to help capture and preserve a small portion of Harlem’s collective memory and to identify issues of local importance as defined by Harlem residents.  Working collaboratively with community-based organizations, students will seek to identify some of Harlem’s most pressing needs, the challenges it currently faces, and the degree to which a collective neighborhood vision for the future exists.  In the final weeks of the course, students will transform their raw audio testimonies into short documentary pieces in one of a wide variety of mediums, including (but not limited to):  video, photography, radio, journalistic writing, theatrical performance, and graphic illustration.
