In October 2007, CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies and Mr. Smith hosted a reception celebrating 500 Thomas W. Smith Academic Fellowships.

Mr Smith has been supporting CUNY Baccalaureate students for the past 16 years with annual contributions totaling, to date, over $3,000,000. Every year, when he addresses the new fellows, Tom uses as a metaphor – for persistence and the value of adding to one’s knowledge day by day – of how a single penny when doubled every day will yield millions of dollars after only one month.

The song you can listen to here, “Tom’s Penny,” was written for this events and performed by a former Smith Fellow, Meghan Duffy, who is currently a PhD candidate at the CUNY Graduate Center. Ms Duffy wrote the lyrics for the song which was also recorded on a CD and given to all attendees as a gift.

Hope you enjoy the song!
