Thomas W. Smith Academic Fellowship Application
Thomas W. Smith Academic Fellowships are funded through a generous donation by Mr. Thomas W. Smith to recognize academic excellence. Awards are disbursed in September and February (paid out after students’ tuition bills are due). Subject to maintenance of good academic standing, awards are renewable until the recipient completes all degree contract credits and graduates from the program.
In order to be eligible, at the time of application students must:
- Have at least 45 credits completed;
- Have at least 6 CUNY credits in progress;
- Have at least 6 credits remaining to complete the CUNY BA degree;
- Have no incompletes on their record without valid explanation and documentation;
- Be in good standing (not on academic probation).
Because the Smith Fellowship recognizes academic excellence, attention is given to the applicant’s GPA and to the seriousness of the applicant’s academic interests and plans. International students may apply.
Typically, 25 awards are given each year. Awards of $2,715 per semester are made to full-time students (minimum 12 credits per semester) and $1,380-$2,070 per semester to part-time students (6-11 credits per semester).
Recipients must: take at least six credits each semester following the award; attend an orientation and awards ceremony for their Fellowship cohort; submit a report each semester to be considered for renewal; and have a graduate audit when they reach 100 credits. Please be advised that CUNY Baccalaureate reserves the right to scale back or terminate a recipient’s funding if it is determined that the student is taking excessive elective credits.

You have to fill out this application. Make sure your responses are well thought out and proofread before submitting your application. (You can compose your responses in a separate document and copy and paste into the online form.) Please note that all questions have an answer limit of 4000 characters or roughly 650 words. The character count includes spaces- your word processing program will show you that option.
Only one letter of recommendation is required. At a minimum, the recommender should be familiar with the nature and quality of your academic work and should address that in the letter. He/She can also address any of your other achievements, be they academic or extracurricular. If you have established a faculty mentor relationship, the letter should be from your mentor. If your mentor is not as familiar with your academics as another professor is, you can provide an additional letter from another professor. If you are a new student in CUNY BA who does not yet have an official mentor, we would accept a letter from any other professor (including an adjunct).
Faculty can email their letters to firstname.lastname@example.org ONLY if they are using their CUNY college email account. All other letters must be submitted in a sealed envelope on official stationery and sent to Regina Matthews at the CUNY Baccalaureate Office at the CUNY Graduate Center. Letters must be received by the scholarship deadline. You application is not complete until your application AND the letter of recommendation are received.
Deadline for this scholarship is 5 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2017.
Letters of recommendation must be received by the deadline. No exceptions will be made.
